This instructable shows you how i built a dog proof gate latch for our double gate chain link fence.
Dog proof fence gate latch.
Go to each gate that has a fork latch.
Standard fork latches simply need lifted in order to free the gate from the latched position.
Opting for super durable materials such as wrought iron brick or in some cases properly sealed hardwoods will usually stop dogs from powering right through the fence.
Chain link dog kennel latches are specially designed for use on dog kennels and animal cages for tight allowances.
These are long metal bars that can be attached to the fence to prevent your dog from getting the foothold he needs to get over.
Some latches are key locking while others can simply be locked with a padlock or another device.
This will prevent most dogs from opening the latch.
The dogs knew how to lift the latch and escape and then when we locked the latch they managed to push through the bottom of the chain link fence to escape.
The kennel latch has been designed to minimize space between the gate frame and the kennel frame and is available in 1 3 8 x 1 3 8 sizes only.
Cut a piece of rigid wire about 6 inches long and bend it into a u shape.
We have been having problems for years with our dogs escaping from our double gate latched fence.
Put the wire into the hole of the fork latch.
A gate latch is designed to keep the gate of a fence or wall secure in the closed position.
