Double shear beam load cells are used to measure compressive forces. They are supported on both ends and loaded in the middle measuring shear strain due to the applied load. It is clamped on to the rope and is used to measure the slackness or tension of a rope on a crane elevator. This is a non invasive method of weighing the load in crane elevator for overload monitoring purpose.

By either mounting on the ends and loading in the center or mounting in the center and loading on the ends the result is often a more efficient support structure.
